Arthur Edward Dunn, a 43-year-old officer with the California Highway Patrol, tragically lost his life on July 9, 1977. On that fateful day, Officer Dunn had arrested a suspect for drunk driving and was transporting him to jail. During the transport, the suspect, who had managed to conceal a small-caliber handgun, shot Officer Dunn from behind. The incident occurred around midnight on California State Highway 89 near the Dana cut-off in Shasta County.
After being shot, Officer Dunn's patrol car went over an embankment. When he failed to arrive at the jail or respond to radio contact, a search was initiated, leading to the discovery of his patrol car and the grim realization of what had transpired.
The suspect, who had escaped by kicking out the patrol car's rear window, was apprehended nearby shortly after the incident. The subsequent investigation revealed the details of the tragic event, and the suspect was charged with second-degree murder. On April 26, 1978, the suspect was found guilty and sentenced to nine years in prison, which was the maximum sentence for second-degree murder at that time. This case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and led to increased awareness and measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Officer Dunn's death was a significant loss to the California Highway Patrol and the community he served. He had been a dedicated officer for 14 years, assigned to the Burney Resident Post for a decade. His commitment to public safety and his ultimate sacrifice were honored by his colleagues and the broader law enforcement community. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, a section of State Route 89 in Shasta County was dedicated in his memory on November 4, 2002. This dedication serves as a lasting tribute to Officer Dunn's bravery and the high price he paid in the line of duty.
