Floyd Harold "Bernie" Swartz, a 33-year-old police officer from Pinole, California, tragically lost his life on May 3, 1980, while in the line of duty. Swartz, a Vietnam veteran who had received an early honorable discharge from the Air Force to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time police officer, had served with the Pinole Police Department for ten years. On the day of his death, Officer Swartz was involved in a high-stakes operation to apprehend a murder suspect. The suspect, who had been hiding in dense weeds behind a residential area, opened fire on Swartz and his fellow officers as they attempted to coax him out of his hiding spot. Swartz was shot in the throat and succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect responsible for Swartz's death was wanted for the brutal stabbing of a 19-year-old girl, whom he and another man had abducted from her home four nights earlier. Following the shooting, the suspect surrendered to the authorities after a five-hour standoff. He was subsequently convicted of two counts of first-degree murder—one for the young woman and one for Officer Swartz—and was sentenced to death. The convicted murderer remained on death row until his death in prison in December 2020.
