James B. Evans, a 39-year-old Deputy Sheriff with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, tragically lost his life on May 9, 1980, in Lytle Creek, California. On that fateful day, Deputy Evans was involved in a high-stakes pursuit following a bank robbery at the Security Pacific Bank in Norco, California. The robbers, heavily armed and dressed in military fatigues, had engaged in a violent confrontation with law enforcement, resulting in a chaotic chase through Riverside and San Bernardino
counties.
The pursuit led Deputy Evans and other officers into the remote mountainous region of Lytle Creek. As Deputy Evans rounded a curve near the Stockton Flat Campground in the San Bernardino National Forest, the suspects, who had stopped their vehicle, ambushed him. They opened fire with high-powered rifles, including M-16s, fatally wounding Deputy Evans. The suspects then fled on foot, prompting a massive manhunt that lasted through the night and into the next day.
The aftermath of the incident saw significant law enforcement efforts to apprehend the suspects. During the pursuit and subsequent manhunt, one suspect was killed at the bank, another was killed while being apprehended, and three were captured and taken into custody. These three suspects were later convicted and sentenced to life in prison, as California did not have the death penalty at the time.
Deputy Evans' death was a profound loss to his family, colleagues, and the community. He was a dedicated officer with a commendable service record, having joined the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in 1975 after serving as a Reserve Officer with the Colton Police Department. Deputy Evans was also a Vietnam War veteran and was pursuing a Master’s Degree in Business Administration at the time of his death. He left behind his wife, Mary, six children, his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
The case of Deputy Evans' murder highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and led to increased awareness and measures to protect officers in the line of duty. The suspects' apprehension and subsequent life sentences brought some measure of justice, but the loss of Deputy Evans remains a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve and protect their communities.
