Robert D. Melton, a police officer with the Gardena Police Department in California, succumbed to complications from gunshot wounds sustained on June 3, 1981. On that day, Officer Melton and his partner were flagged down by citizens who reported a robbery in progress near the intersection of Compton Boulevard (now Gardena Boulevard) and Vermont Avenue.
