Elyas Yakub Abowath, aged 36, tragically lost his life on August 8, 1985, in Diamond Bar, California. Elyas was a victim of the notorious serial killer Richard Ramirez, also known as "The Night Stalker." On that fateful night, Ramirez broke into the Abowath family home located at 21303 Pinehill Lane. He entered the master bedroom where Elyas was sleeping and shot him in the head with a .25-caliber handgun, instantly killing him. This brutal act was part of Ramirez's 14-month spree of terror across Southern California, during which he committed numerous murders, assaults, and burglaries.
Following the murder of Elyas, Ramirez attacked his wife, Sakina Abowath, who was also in the house along with their two young sons, aged three years and eight weeks at the time. Sakina was bound and assaulted by Ramirez, who then proceeded to ransack the house, taking valuables before fleeing the scene. The attack on the Abowath family was the final murder for which Ramirez was convicted.
The investigation into Elyas's murder was part of a larger effort to capture Ramirez, who had been terrorizing the region. Law enforcement agencies worked tirelessly to track down the serial killer, and their efforts eventually led to his arrest on August 31, 1985. Ramirez was charged with 13 counts of murder, among other crimes, and was convicted in 1989. He was sentenced to death and remained on California's death row until his death from natural causes in 2013.
