Robert Samuels, a 40-year-old resident of Los Angeles, California, met a tragic end on December 8, 1988. He was found dead in his Northridge home, having been both bludgeoned and shot. The investigation revealed that Robert was in the midst of a contentious divorce from his wife, Mary Ellen Samuels. This decision, however, proved fatal as Mary Ellen saw him as more valuable dead than alive. She orchestrated his murder to claim $240,000 in life insurance, $70,000 from their co-owned Subway sandwich shop, and an additional $160,000 from refinancing their home.
Mary Ellen Samuels, later dubbed the "Green Widow," was the mastermind behind the murder. She enlisted the help of James Bernstein, her daughter's husband, to arrange the killing. Although Bernstein was not the gunman, he played a crucial role in the plot. The police discovered that Mary Ellen had been planning Robert's murder for years, driven by financial gain. The investigation also uncovered disturbing evidence, including photographs of Mary Ellen lying naked, covered in money, which she had spent on luxury items and indulgences shortly after Robert's death.
The case took another dark turn when James Bernstein was found strangled to death in June 1989. Mary Ellen was accused of paying two men, Paul Edwin Gaul and Darrell Ray Edwards, $5,000 to kill Bernstein, fearing he would implicate her in Robert's murder. Friends of Bernstein had reported that he was remorseful and scared of Mary Ellen, having confessed multiple times to arranging Robert's murder. The salacious details of the case, including Mary Ellen's extravagant spending and the brutal nature of the murders, captured national attention.
Mary Ellen Samuels was eventually put on trial for both murders. The trial revealed the extent of her cold-blooded actions and her manipulation of those around her. In September 1994, she was convicted of murder and sentenced to death in the gas chamber. The case remains a chilling example of how greed and manipulation can lead to devastating consequences.
