The incident occurred during a department staff training seminar at the Holiday Inn in Torrance, California. An armed gunman burst into the conference room on the 12th floor, attempting a robbery. In a heroic act, Sergeant Vanderpool immediately lunged at the gunman to protect his colleagues.
Unfortunately, he was fatally shot during the struggle. Captain Michael Tracy, who attempted to assist Sergeant Vanderpool, was also shot and killed. The gunman, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, ultimately choked to death on the vest while being subdued by other officers.
The aftermath of this tragic event saw an outpouring of grief and respect for the fallen officers. An estimated 4,000 mourners gathered on February 21, 1994, to bid farewell to Sergeant Vanderpool and Captain Tracy. The ceremony, held on a grassy knoll overlooking Los Angeles harbor, featured a soulful rendition of “Amazing Grace” played by a lone bagpiper, highlighting the deep sense of loss felt by the community and fellow law enforcement officers.
Sergeant Vanderpool had served with the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department for 13 years and had previously served with the Los Angeles Police Department for nine years. His dedication to his duty and his ultimate sacrifice were honored by his colleagues and the community he served. The incident underscored the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the bravery required to confront such threats.
No further arrests or suspects were involved in the case, as the gunman died at the scene. The investigation concluded with the understanding that the officers had acted with valor in the face of imminent danger.
