Helen Alvarez, a 61-year-old grandmother from Rialto, California, was tragically killed on March 3, 1996. The incident occurred at the Santiago Parkside Estates mobile home park on South Riverside Avenue, where Helen and her daughter, Sonia Alvarez, were returning home after visiting Sonia's boyfriend in Riverside County jail. As they arrived at their driveway around 11 p.m., an assailant approached and shot both women in the head.
Helen succumbed to her injuries the following day, while Sonia survived despite being shot in the face.
The investigation into Helen Alvarez's death revealed potential connections to a broader criminal case involving Orlando Romero and his brother, Christopher Self. At the time of the shooting, Romero and Self were facing multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and robbery, for a crime spree in western Riverside County from October to December 1992. It is believed that Helen and Sonia were targeted because Sonia was dating Romero and may have been perceived as a threat to his defense, possibly due to her knowledge or potential testimony against him.

The Rialto Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit has continued to investigate, suspecting that the brothers may have orchestrated the attack on Helen and Sonia. Detective Sgt. Paul Stella, who has been involved in the case, noted the challenges in solving it due to the fear and reluctance of potential witnesses to come forward. The case's complexity and the involvement of individuals already convicted of other heinous crimes have added layers of difficulty to the investigation.
