Shayne Daniel York, a 26-year-old Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy, tragically lost his life on August 14, 1997, in Buena Park, California. York and his fiancée, also a sheriff's deputy, were off-duty and visiting the De’Cut Hair Salon when two armed robbers stormed in. The robbers ordered everyone to lie face down on the floor and began collecting wallets and purses.
Upon discovering York's badge in his wallet, one of the robbers, despite York's compliance and lack of resistance, shot him in the back of the head. York was rushed to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later, on August 16, 1997.
The suspects, identified as Andre Willis and Kevin Boyce, were apprehended shortly after the incident. They were arrested following a traffic stop by Fullerton Police, who linked them to the crime based on a witness's description of their getaway car. Both men had prior convictions and were on parole at the time of the murder. The investigation revealed that Boyce was the one who fired the fatal shot. In August 2000, Boyce was found guilty of first-degree murder with special circumstances and was sentenced to death. Willis received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
York's death was a significant blow to the law enforcement community, highlighting the dangers officers face even when off duty. His funeral was attended by thousands, including high-ranking officials and fellow officers, who remembered him as a hero. The case was prosecuted vigorously, with the special circumstances of murder during a robbery and the killing of a peace officer leading to the severe sentences for both perpetrators.
