Sylvia Velia "Nena" Flores, aged 13, tragically lost her life on July 21, 2000, in Pico Rivera, California. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when Sylvia, along with her father Richard Flores, 42, and her brothers Richard Jr., 17, and Matthew, 10, were brutally murdered in their home. The attack was carried out by Michael Naranjo, then 17, and his girlfriend Monica Diaz, who was 16 at the time and an adopted member of the Flores family. The motive behind the heinous crime was rooted in the belief that Sylvia's parents disapproved of the relationship between Naranjo and Diaz.
The night of the murders, Naranjo and Diaz conspired to stage a fake robbery to draw the family closer together, as Diaz believed her aunt and uncle were having marital problems. However, the plan escalated into a violent attack. Naranjo entered the Flores home and, with Diaz's assistance, stabbed Richard Flores, his wife Sylvia, and their three children. Sylvia Flores, the mother, survived despite sustaining 15 stab wounds and having her throat slashed. The only other survivors were Monica's half-sister, Laura Reta, and the eldest Flores daughter, Esperanza, who were both 18 and shared a bedroom.
Following the murders, both Naranjo and Diaz were arrested and charged. Naranjo pleaded guilty to the murders and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Diaz was found guilty by a jury and received the same sentence. During her trial, Diaz's defense argued that she had suffered enduring psychological effects from a difficult early childhood, but the court upheld her 100-year-to-life prison sentence, rejecting claims that it constituted cruel and unusual punishment.
