Zaire Washington, a 24-year-old resident of Oakland, California, was tragically killed on June 30, 2008. Washington was standing with a group of friends on his mother's front steps in the 8000 block of MacArthur Boulevard when a silver SUV pulled up across the street. A man exited the vehicle and began shooting at the group, prompting a second man to join in the attack. The first gunman shouted, "Get him!"
as the second man chased Washington down an alley, ultimately shooting him twice in the back and buttocks. Washington succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.
The investigation into Washington's death revealed that he was scheduled to testify in a court hearing on July 21, 2008, against Marcus Jones, who had been accused of shooting Washington two years earlier. Washington had identified Jones as the shooter in the 2006 incident. Jones, who is also the half-brother of Delonzo Logwood, eventually pleaded no contest to assault with a deadly weapon in the 2006 case. This connection to a pending court case and the involvement of gang members added complexity to the investigation.
Delonzo Logwood and Dijon Holifield were later charged with multiple murders, including the killing of Zaire Washington. The charges against them included gang enhancements, which could potentially lead to the death penalty. The preliminary hearing for their case began in July 2018, with retired Alameda County Superior Court Judge Vernon Nakahara presiding. The hearing aimed to determine if there was sufficient evidence to hold Logwood and Holifield accountable for the charges. Testimonies during the hearing revealed that nine firearms were used in the five murders attributed to the two men, including an AR-15-like rifle.
In a significant development, a plea deal proposed by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price was rejected by Superior Court Judge Mark McCannon in March 2023. The deal would have given Logwood a 15-year sentence for his involvement in the murders, but the judge decided that Logwood should go to trial instead. This decision was influenced by the lack of remorse shown by Logwood and the controversial nature of the plea deal. Subsequently, two of the three murder charges against Logwood were dropped due to an uncooperative witness, leaving him to face trial for the remaining charges.
