Samantha Ann Sproson, a 38-year-old woman from Hermosa Beach, California, tragically lost her life on December 31, 2011. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, she was shot and killed in her apartment located in the 700 block of Manhattan Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing an argument followed by a gunshot early that morning. When police arrived at the scene, they found Sproson dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
A man, later identified as David Brian Abbott, was detained outside the building and subsequently arrested.
The investigation revealed that Sproson and Abbott, who were in a tumultuous relationship, had a history of domestic disputes. Friends of Sproson recounted instances where Abbott had previously threatened her with a gun. On the morning of her death, neighbors heard Sproson scream, "Don't shoot," followed by a gunshot. Abbott, who had a blood-alcohol content of around .30%, was found attempting to hide the gun and bullet casing when police arrived.
Abbott was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty. During the trial, it was revealed that he had aimed the gun at Sproson's head and fired after counting down twice. Despite the defense's argument that Abbott was a hardworking man with no history of violence, the jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. In August 2014, Abbott was sentenced to 15 years in state prison for the alcohol-fueled killing of Samantha Sproson. The case highlighted the severe consequences of domestic violence and the tragic loss of a woman described by friends as giving, open-hearted, and charismatic.
