Xzavier Johnson, a 26-year-old resident of Stockton, California, was fatally shot on July 5, 2014, in East Oakland. The incident occurred near the corner of High Street and Lyon Avenue, close to Brookdale Park, around 10:20 a.m. Johnson was found with multiple gunshot wounds near the corner of 27th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard shortly after the shooting and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported that Johnson had been involved in an argument with Lamar Shaw, a 20-year-old Oakland resident, who then armed himself with a black semi-automatic firearm and shot Johnson five or six times. The police later recovered a Beretta .40-caliber handgun from Shaw's apartment, which was believed to be the murder weapon.
Lamar Shaw was arrested the morning after the shooting when he turned himself in to the police. He was charged with first-degree murder and faced trial in Alameda County Superior Court. During the trial, Shaw admitted to shooting Johnson but claimed it was an act of self-defense, stating that he felt his life was in danger. However, the prosecution argued that Johnson posed no threat to Shaw, who had escalated a verbal argument into a fatal shooting. The court found Shaw guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to 50 years to life in state prison. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of gun violence and the impact it had on the families involved.
