Conrado Pizarro, a 26-year-old resident of Palm Desert, California, was tragically shot on December 3, 2014, at a Shell gas station located at the corner of Washington Street and Avenue of the States. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. when Pizarro, who had just purchased a drink from the station, was confronted by a white SUV as he attempted to leave the premises.
The SUV cut off Pizarro's vehicle, prompting him to reverse and approach the SUV, possibly recognizing someone inside or reacting to being cut off. A brief confrontation ensued, during which an occupant of the SUV fired a gun into Pizarro's car. The SUV then sped away, and Pizarro's vehicle crashed into a concrete wall. Pizarro succumbed to his injuries on December 5, 2014.
The investigation into Pizarro's death led to the arrest of Kurtis Knigge, an 18-year-old from La Quinta, California. Knigge was apprehended following a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle, which ended in Cathedral City. At the time of his arrest, Knigge was already on probation for a previous gun-related offense and was wanted in connection with several burglaries. He admitted to the shooting during an interview with investigators, exonerating a teenage passenger who was with him at the time.
Knigge was charged with second-degree murder and shooting at an occupied vehicle, among other charges. Despite prosecutors seeking a first-degree murder conviction, the jury found Knigge guilty of second-degree murder. In April 2021, he was sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison. The court proceedings revealed that the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation between Pizarro and Knigge in the gas station parking lot, although the exact nature of their argument remains unclear. Pizarro's family, including his ex-girlfriend and their young daughter, expressed relief that justice had been served, though they continued to mourn the loss of a loved one who had been working towards a promising future as an air conditioning technician.
