Jose Andres Escobar, a 19-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on January 10, 2015, near Crenshaw Boulevard and West 59th Street in Hyde Park, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s records, Escobar and a friend were collecting aluminum cans around 7 a.m. when they were approached by a man who shouted, “Where you from?” The assailant then pulled out a gun and shot Escobar.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, Escobar succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.
The Los Angeles Police Department launched an investigation into the murder, but the case remains unsolved. In an effort to gather more information, the LAPD announced a $75,000 reward for any leads that could result in the conviction of the perpetrator. The suspect was described as a Latino male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, with a shaved head, and believed to be between 30 and 35 years old. Surveillance footage was released to the public in hopes of identifying the gunman, but no arrests have been made to date.
