Nephi Arrequin, a 21-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on May 7, 2015, in Cerritos, Los Angeles County. The incident occurred when Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were investigating reports of a suspicious couple knocking on doors in the neighborhood. During the investigation, deputies encountered Arrequin, who was in a vehicle. According to the deputies, Arrequin allegedly attempted to run over one of them with his car, prompting the deputy to open fire.
Arrequin was shot and subsequently lost control of his vehicle, which crashed into an electrical box, taking down a light pole and shearing a fire hydrant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The aftermath of Arrequin's death sparked significant community outrage and calls for transparency. Family members and community activists demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They organized marches and vigils, emphasizing that Arrequin was a good person who did not deserve to die in such a manner. His mother, Carla Wade, expressed her grief and disbelief, describing her son as a loving, caring, and respectful individual. The family also revealed that Arrequin's girlfriend was five months pregnant at the time of his death, adding to the emotional weight of the tragedy.
In response to the community's demands, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department conducted an investigation into the shooting. The department's Homicide Bureau was tasked with gathering all evidence related to the incident. The family and community members called for the release of all evidence to ensure a fair and transparent review of the events that led to Arrequin's death. Despite these efforts, the case remained a point of contention, with ongoing debates about the use of force by law enforcement and the need for accountability in such incidents.
