Jose Manuel Torres, a 17-year-old Latino, was tragically shot and killed on October 13, 2010, near North Avalon Boulevard and East Q Street in Wilmington, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, Torres was shot in the head at approximately 9:22 a.m. while standing on the sidewalk. The incident occurred near Phineas Banning Senior High School, which was subsequently placed on lockdown for about an hour and a half as a precautionary measure.
The lockdown was lifted around 11:30 a.m. after authorities determined there was no immediate threat to the school.
The investigation into Torres' death revealed that the shooting might have been gang-related, although it was not considered a drive-by shooting. Instead, the vehicle involved, described as a black truck, possibly a Honda, was parked at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing two men in the truck who asked Torres a question before one of them shot him. The Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division, led by Lt. James Alvarez, was actively searching for the suspects and the vehicle. Despite these efforts, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with Torres' murder.
