Jose DeJesus Fuentes-Martinez, aged 52, was tragically found dead on May 30, 2015, in Firebaugh, California. The incident occurred around 1:30 am when two individuals reported to the Mendota Police that they had witnessed a shooting along a canal bank off Jerrold Avenue, north of Nees Avenue in Firebaugh. Upon arrival, Fresno County Sheriff's deputies discovered Fuentes-Martinez's body, confirming he had been shot to death. This incident marked the fourth homicide in Fresno County for that year.

The investigation quickly led to the arrest of 37-year-old Juan Ortiz of San Joaquin. Ortiz was apprehended after being spotted walking in the area of Oller and 9th streets in Mendota, carrying a firearm. He was detained, interviewed, and subsequently arrested on charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Ortiz was under Post-Release Community Supervision at the time, a condition of California's AB109 legislation.

The case remains under investigation as detectives continue to seek additional witnesses and establish a motive for the killing. The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has urged anyone with information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation. This tragic event underscores the persistent challenges law enforcement faces in addressing violent crimes and ensuring community safety.
