Clare Orton, a 19-year-old resident of Walnut Creek, California, tragically lost her life on July 21, 2015, in a murder-suicide incident. Clare, who had recently completed her freshman year at San Diego State University, was at her parents' home when the incident occurred. She was known for her academic excellence, being an honors student majoring in environmental engineering, and her athletic prowess as a cross-country runner during her high school years at Las Lomas High School.

On the morning of July 21, Clare was at home when her ex-boyfriend, Scott Bertics, arrived at the residence. Scott, a 21-year-old from Lafayette, had previously attended Stanford University but had taken a leave of absence. The two had dated in the past, but their relationship had ended amicably. However, on that fateful day, Scott shot Clare at her parents' home before turning the gun on himself. The police responded to reports of gunshots and found both Clare and Scott deceased at the scene.

The incident was a shock to the community, as there had been no prior indications of violence or threats from Scott. Friends and family described Clare as a hardworking and motivated individual who was well-loved by her peers. The investigation by the Walnut Creek Police Department confirmed the incident as a murder-suicide, with Scott Bertics being the perpetrator. There were no arrests or further suspects involved, as the case was closed following the confirmation of the murder-suicide.

In the aftermath, the community held vigils and memorials to honor Clare's memory. Her death left a profound impact on those who knew her, highlighting the tragic consequences of unresolved mental health issues and the importance of support systems for young individuals. The case did not lead to any litigations or extended legal battles, as the circumstances were clear and the responsible party had also died in the incident.
