Kejon Wayne Atkins, a 22-year-old man from Compton, California, tragically lost his life on July 27, 2015, after being shot four days earlier on July 23. On the morning of the incident, Atkins was standing on the sidewalk in the 1800 block of East 126th Street in Willowbrook when a gold-colored sedan approached. An individual inside the vehicle fired multiple shots, striking Atkins in the head. He was immediately transported to St.
Francis Memorial Hospital in Lynwood, where he succumbed to his injuries four days later. The Los Angeles County coroner's records confirmed his death at 2:22 p.m. on July 27. Authorities have stated that there was no evidence to suggest the shooting was gang-related.
Despite the passage of time, the investigation into Atkins' murder has faced significant challenges. Detectives have not made any arrests in connection with the case. In 2017, a photograph of a possible suspect's vehicle was released to the public in hopes of generating new leads. The suspect was described as a young man in his late teens to early 20s, with several tattoos on his back. It was believed that two or three other men were also in the car, which was last seen heading west on El Segundo Boulevard. Surveillance footage captured images of the suspect's car as well as a two-tone, maroon/gray SUV, possibly a Pontiac Aztec, which might have been following the suspect's vehicle.
Kejon's mother, Techea Adams, has been relentless in her pursuit of justice for her son. She has organized walks through the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, hoping to encourage witnesses to come forward with information. Adams has also set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for a reward, in addition to the $10,000 offered by the Los Angeles County supervisors. Despite moving out of Compton, she remains determined to find her son's killer and bring them to justice. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department continues to urge anyone with information to contact their Homicide Bureau or Crime Stoppers to provide anonymous tips.
