Francisco Bautista, a 15-year-old Latino, tragically lost his life on September 23, 2015, in Florence, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, Francisco was shot in an alley shortly after 4:30 p.m. He was with a 19-year-old friend, and the two were allegedly spray painting a wall when a gunman approached and began shooting at them. While his friend managed to escape, Francisco was struck and killed.
The incident was reported to be gang-related, as the graffiti activity was taking place in a rival gang's territory.
The investigation into Francisco's death led to the arrest of Esteban Ceja, a 23-year-old member of the DNA (Drugs and Alcohol) street gang. Ceja was identified as the shooter by witnesses who noted his distinctive facial tattoos. Following the shooting, Ceja fled the scene, and despite immediate police searches, he remained at large for several months. In November 2015, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office filed felony charges against Ceja for murder and attempted murder, prompting the FBI to assist in tracking him down.
Ceja was eventually located in El Paso, Texas, in March 2016, through electronic surveillance of his friends and family. He was arrested and transported back to Los Angeles, where he was booked into jail. Ceja, also known by his gang moniker "Payaso" or "Clown," faced charges that could result in a life sentence if convicted. The case highlighted the ongoing issues of gang violence and the dangers faced by young individuals involved in such activities.
