Leon Antwan Scott, a 28-year-old man from Compton, California, tragically lost his life on December 31, 2015. The incident occurred in the 15600 block of South Washington Avenue in East Compton. According to reports, the events leading up to Scott's death began earlier that evening when Martin Ernesto Cervantes, a 24-year-old man, and several accomplices allegedly stole a U-Haul truck from a parking lot in Long Beach.
Around 10:30 p.m., Scott, who was at home with his wife, heard his car alarm go off. Upon investigating, he discovered that the U-Haul truck had backed into his sedan. Scott decided to confront the driver, leading to a pursuit that ended a block away on South Washington Avenue.
When Scott approached the truck, Cervantes opened the door and shot him. Authorities arrived shortly after the shooting, and Scott was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:47 p.m. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department quickly identified the individuals involved in the incident, including Cervantes, who was initially held on unrelated charges. Cervantes faced multiple charges, including two counts of using an assault rifle on a peace officer, shooting at an occupied aircraft, fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s vehicle, and unlawful firearm activity. On January 29, 2016, Cervantes pleaded not guilty to the murder charge related to Scott's death, which was added to his existing charges. He was scheduled to return to court on March 14, 2016.
The investigation also revealed that another man was involved in the killing. This individual, whose name was not released, was also being held on unrelated charges. The case highlighted the dangers of confronting suspects and the tragic consequences that can arise from such encounters. The legal proceedings against Cervantes and his accomplices were closely monitored, as the community sought justice for Scott's untimely death.
