Victor Quintanilla, a 37-year-old resident of Pomona, California, was tragically shot and killed on February 3, 2016. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant located in the 1700 block of South Garey Avenue. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's records, Quintanilla had parked his car and gone inside the restaurant to purchase food. Upon returning to his vehicle, he was shot multiple times in the upper torso through the driver's side window.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:20 p.m. Despite the efforts of investigators, no witnesses to the shooting were found at the time, and the motive behind the attack remained unclear.
The investigation into Quintanilla's death revealed a possible connection to another shooting that occurred earlier that evening. At approximately 8:56 p.m., three 17-year-old teenagers were standing outside a residence in the 1700 block of Norval Street, just a few blocks from where Quintanilla was killed. An unknown male approached the teenagers on foot and began shooting, injuring two of them. The shooter then fled south toward Franklin Avenue, where a dark-colored Honda was seen speeding away. Although investigators initially suspected a link between the two incidents, no concrete evidence was found to connect the teenagers to Quintanilla, and none of the victims were believed to be involved in gang activity.
The case took a significant turn when two young gang members were charged with Quintanilla's murder. Johnny Frank Urena, 18, and Juan Ricardo Morales, 24, were identified as the suspects responsible for the shooting. Both men were documented members of a local gang and were accused of randomly targeting individuals as part of gang-related violence. Urena and Morales were charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, using a handgun to cause great bodily injury and death, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and acting in association with a criminal street gang. Morales faced an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The suspects were held in lieu of $9 million bail each and were scheduled to be arraigned in the Los Angeles County Superior Court Pomona Courthouse.
