On August 8, 2016, Jason Jermaine Dupre Newman, a 35-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in the Pacoima neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The incident occurred shortly before 10:45 a.m. at a residence located in the 13000 block of Montford Street. According to the Los Angeles Police Department an argument between Jason Newman and the suspect escalated, resulting in the suspect shooting Newman. The suspect then fled the scene in a burgundy vehicle.
Emergency responders transported Jason Newman to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. His father identified him as a father and electrician's apprentice working for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Newman was also known to be a devoted father to his 4-year-old daughter. He did not reside at the location where the shooting took place but was known to visit frequently.
The LAPD apprehended the suspect along with two other individuals on Foothill Boulevard near Osborne Street shortly after the shooting. Investigators indicated that the incident did not appear to be gang-related and suggested that the motive was personal in nature, possibly stemming from a perceived act of disrespect by the suspect. At the time of the incident, Jason Newman was unarmed. Authorities were in the process of searching the suspect's vehicle for the weapon used in the shooting.
