Alfonso Ibanez Jr., a 25-year-old resident of Oakland, CA, tragically lost his life on August 8, 2016. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 1:45 a.m., at the intersection of Empire and Gibraltar roads in East Oakland. Ibanez Jr. was one of two men fatally shot inside a truck, which was subsequently set on fire. The other victim was identified as Juan Ramos.

The investigation revealed that the attack was perpetrated by Francisco Jesus Hernandez Sr. and his 17-year-old son, Francisco Hernandez Jr. The motive behind the brutal killings was reportedly a minor grievance involving the victims performing doughnuts with their truck on the street. Enraged by this, Hernandez Sr. and his son retrieved firearms and approached the victims' vehicle. Hernandez Sr. fired multiple shots into the truck, killing both Ibanez Jr. and Ramos. The father and son then pulled a third man, Miguel Cruz, out of the truck, beat him, and shot him multiple times before placing him back in the vehicle. The truck was then doused with gasoline and set ablaze. Miraculously, Cruz managed to escape the burning vehicle and survived the attack, later providing crucial testimony against the perpetrators.
Following the incident, both Francisco Jesus Hernandez Sr. and Francisco Hernandez Jr. were arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and arson. The charges also included special circumstances of committing multiple murders and committing murders during the course of arson. The case proceeded to trial, where the surviving victim, Cruz, testified about the harrowing events of that night. His testimony, along with other evidence, painted a chilling picture of the calculated and cold-blooded nature of the crime.
In court, Francisco Hernandez Jr. accepted a plea deal, agreeing to plead no contest to one count of willful, premeditated, and deliberate attempted murder, and admitted to using a firearm.
