Miguel Ferreyra, aged 31, tragically lost his life on August 29, 2016, in a harrowing incident at a care facility in Temecula, California. The incident occurred at the Renee Jennex Small Family Home, a state-licensed facility for severely disabled adults. On that fateful day, James Jennex, the co-operator of the facility, perpetrated a series of heinous acts that culminated in a devastating fire. Jennex, who was found to have a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, shot three developmentally disabled men, including Miguel Ferreyra, in the head before setting the building on fire and subsequently taking his own life. A fourth developmentally disabled man also perished in the fire.
The investigation revealed that Jennex had intentionally started two fires within the facility using a handheld open-flame device. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office confirmed that a gas can and other ignitable materials were found in the rubble. Despite extensive investigations by CalFire and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the motive behind Jennex’s actions remains unclear. The incident was officially classified as a murder-suicide.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, family members of the victims, including those of Jared Anthony-Adolph Prudhomme, Milford Chad Battison, and Richard Alen Driskill, filed wrongful death lawsuits against Renee Jennex, James Jennex’s widow, and the estate of James Jennex. These lawsuits sought compensation for burial expenses and general damages. Renee Jennex responded to the lawsuits by denying responsibility for the deaths. The consolidated cases have seen multiple hearings, with the next scheduled for February 4.
The case has been marked by challenges in obtaining information from public agencies. CalFire initially refused to release details about the cause of the fire, citing exemptions under the California Public Records Act. It was only after persistent inquiries from news organizations that more information was disclosed. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department also faced scrutiny for its handling of the case, particularly regarding the delay in publicly identifying the victims and confirming the nature of the incident.
This tragic event has left a lasting impact on the community and the families of the victims, who continue to seek justice and answers for the loss of their loved ones.
