Two men reported missing were found murdered In the quiet woods of Masardis, Maine, a grim discovery was made on August 15, 1997, bringing a close to a three-year mystery. A bear hunter stumbled upon a shallow grave, and inside, lay the remains of Louis Alexander, a 60-year-old White male, and his associate, Joseph Savitch. Both men, originally from the Fall River area of Massachusetts, had vanished in 1994, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions.
The state medical examiner would later confirm that both men had been shot to death, their demise officially ruled a double homicide.
Alexander, also known as "Miami Beach Louie," and Savitch, nicknamed "Joe the Animal," were described as notorious criminals in both Maine and Massachusetts. In fact, shortly before they disappeared, both men had been indicted in 1994 for a series of burglaries across Aroostook County that reportedly netted them around $1 million in cash and property. This criminal background led some to speculate that their deaths were the result of a mob hit, though this has never been officially confirmed by law enforcement.
The investigation into their murders has been a long and frustrating one. Over the years, clues have faded and potential leads have grown cold. At one point, investigators questioned two suspects who were later arrested in Connecticut, but for reasons that remain unclear, they were never extradited to Maine to face charges in connection with the murders.
