Nathan Proto, a 36-year-old resident of Sebastopol, California, tragically lost his life on October 15, 2016. Nathan was known for his gentle spirit and dedication to his community. He had a background in education, having earned his teaching credential from Sonoma State University and taught kindergarten and third grade before starting his own business in Sebastopol. Nathan was also deeply involved in community projects in San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca, Mexico, where he worked to foster economic opportunities and community pride.

On the fateful day of October 15, 2016, Nathan Proto was one of the victims in a violent incident that occurred during a marijuana robbery in an unincorporated area of Sonoma County, south of Sebastopol. The robbery resulted in the shooting of three individuals, including Nathan. Unfortunately, Nathan and another victim, John Mariana, did not survive the attack. A third victim, a 23-year-old woman, was critically injured but managed to survive despite being shot in the head.

The investigation into the incident quickly identified the suspects as Robert Lee Randolph, Jr. and Maria Teresa Lebron. The suspects fled Sonoma County and were eventually apprehended in Austin, Texas, in December 2018. The arrest was a result of a collaborative effort involving the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals. Randolph and Lebron were found in possession of drugs and a weapon at the time of their arrest.

The legal proceedings that followed culminated in significant sentences for the perpetrators. Robert Lee Randolph, Jr. was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. The charges included the murders of Nathan Proto and John Mariana, as well as the attempted murder of the surviving victim. The court proceedings highlighted the brutal nature of the crime, which stemmed from a marijuana deal that turned violent. The surviving victim, Geena Gauthier, provided a powerful victim impact statement, expressing the lasting trauma and the senselessness of the violence over cannabis.

This tragic event not only took the lives of two individuals but also left a lasting impact on the community and the families involved. Nathan Proto's death serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers associated with illegal drug activities and the devastating consequences they can have on innocent lives.
