John Jessie Mariana, a 28-year-old resident of Guerneville, California, tragically lost his life following a shooting incident in Sebastopol on October 15, 2016. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. on the 5000 block of Highway 116 South. Mariana was one of three victims in the shooting, which also resulted in the death of 36-year-old Nathan Proto from Sebastopol and injuries to an unidentified woman. Mariana succumbed to his injuries on October 18, 2016, after being on life support and subsequently donating his organs.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was connected to a marijuana sale. Robert Lee Randolph, a 36-year-old man from Philadelphia, was identified as the perpetrator. Randolph had a history of purchasing marijuana from Mariana, but their relationship had deteriorated over time. On the night of the incident, Randolph, accompanied by his girlfriend, met with Mariana and Proto at Proto's home, which was an established marijuana growing operation. After the transaction, Randolph opened fire, killing Mariana and Proto, and severely injuring Geena Gauthier, the only surviving victim. Gauthier, despite being shot three times in the head and face, managed to call 911.
Randolph and his girlfriend fled the scene and evaded capture for over two years before being apprehended in Texas in 2018. Randolph was subsequently tried and found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. In November 2022, he was sentenced to two life terms without the possibility of parole for the murders of Mariana and Proto, and an additional life term for the attempted murder of Gauthier. The total sentence amounted to 82 years to life plus two life terms without parole.
The case highlighted the dangers associated with illegal marijuana transactions and the devastating impact of gun violence. Mariana's family and friends were left to cope with the immense grief and loss, while Gauthier continues to live with the physical and emotional scars of the incident. The sentencing of Randolph brought some measure of justice, but the tragic events of that night remain a poignant reminder of the need for safer and more regulated practices in the marijuana industry.
