Enrique Rios, a 16-year-old from Knights Landing, California, was tragically murdered on October 17, 2016. Enrique was a student at Cesar Chavez Community School and worked at Northern California Construction Training (NCCT). He was described by his family as a sweet and talented young man who had a passion for writing rap lyrics and aspired to support his family through his music. His disappearance was reported by his mother, Lola Rios Gutierrez, on October 19, 2016, after he had been missing for two days.
The investigation into Enrique's death revealed that he was kidnapped from his home in Esparto and taken to a secluded area in Knights Landing. The motive behind his abduction and murder was linked to a robbery incident involving his friend, Elijah Moore, who had stolen three ounces of marijuana from David Froste, Chandale Shannon, and Jesus Campos. In an attempt to locate Elijah, David Froste, along with Shannon and Campos, decided to kidnap Enrique, hoping to extract information about Elijah's whereabouts. When Enrique refused to cooperate, he was shot and killed by David Froste.
The case remained unsolved for nearly two years until one of the perpetrators came forward and testified, leading to the arrests of David Froste, Chandale Shannon, Jesus Campos, and Jonathan Froste. The trial revealed the gruesome details of the crime, including how Enrique was shot and his body burned to conceal the evidence. Elijah Moore, who was also kidnapped and murdered by the same group, was severely beaten, and his head was crushed before his body was burned.
In May 2022, a Yolo County jury returned guilty verdicts for Chandale Shannon and Jesus Campos. Shannon was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Enrique Rios and Elijah Moore, along with kidnapping and special circumstances of multiple murders and kidnapping during the course of a murder. Campos was convicted of second-degree murder for Enrique Rios, first-degree murder for Elijah Moore, kidnapping, and special circumstances of multiple murders and kidnapping during the course of a murder. Both men face potential sentences of life without the possibility of parole. David Froste, the primary perpetrator, was also convicted and sentenced for his role in the murders.
The convictions brought some measure of justice to the families of Enrique Rios and Elijah Moore, who had endured years of uncertainty and grief. The case highlighted the devastating impact of violence and the lengths to which individuals would go to exact revenge, ultimately leading to the tragic loss of two young lives.
