On October 19, 2016, Deputy Sheriff Jack Lanceson Hopkins, aged 31, was tragically killed in the line of duty while responding to a domestic disturbance call near the intersection of County Roads 115 and 170, approximately eight miles south of Alturas, California. At around 10:27 AM, Deputy Hopkins arrived at the rural property and was immediately fired upon by the primary suspect. The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle but was intercepted by Sheriff Mike Poindexter, who was also responding to the call. An exchange of gunfire ensued between Sheriff Poindexter and the suspect, resulting in the suspect being wounded and subsequently taken into custody. Unfortunately, Deputy Hopkins was killed instantly during the initial encounter with the suspect.
Deputy Hopkins had been with the Modoc County Sheriff's Office for about a year, having previously served with the Alturas Police Department. He was known for his dedication and commitment to his community. His untimely death left a profound impact on his family, colleagues, and the community he served. He is survived by his father, Lance Hopkins, his mother, Carroll Hopkins, his grandmother, Twila Hopkins, five siblings, and a large extended family.
The suspect involved in the shooting was apprehended and later found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
