Antonia Herrera, a 23-year-old woman from Escondido, California, was tragically found dead on January 12, 2017. Her body was discovered on the side of Champagne Boulevard in unincorporated Escondido, near Interstate 15. Initially, the circumstances surrounding her death were shrouded in mystery, but it was later confirmed that she had been shot to death.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Department ruled her death a homicide, although the details of her autopsy were sealed.
The investigation into Herrera's death led authorities to Las Vegas, where they arrested Paul Castro, a 27-year-old documented gang member. Castro was an acquaintance of Herrera, having met her through mutual friends in Las Vegas. On the night of her death, Herrera was traveling back to San Marcos from Las Vegas with her boyfriend, two witnesses, and Castro. During the journey, Castro, who has a history of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and methamphetamine use, became paranoid and believed that Herrera and her driver were plotting to kill him. This paranoia culminated in Castro pulling out a gun and shooting Herrera three times. Her boyfriend, who tried to protect her, was grazed by one of the bullets. After the shooting, Castro ordered the driver to dump Herrera's body on the side of the road before demanding to be taken back to Las Vegas.
Castro was later extradited to San Diego, where he faced charges of murder and assault. During his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty and was held on $3 million bail. If convicted, Castro could face 69 years to life in state prison. The two witnesses in the car were expected to testify at a later date. The motive behind the murder remained unclear, but investigators believed that Castro acted alone in the killing. Herrera's family, devastated by her sudden and violent death, sought answers and justice for their loved one. They revealed that in the months leading up to her death, Herrera had feared for her life and had even taken out a life insurance policy on herself.
