Lynda Fick, a 70-year-old resident of Covina, California, was found dead on February 19, 2017, in her home on South Rancho Sinaloa Drive. The tragic incident also claimed the life of Nicole Biewener, a 23-year-old woman who had recently begun dating Lynda's son, Lucas Doi Fick. The Covina Police Department responded to a call at the Fick residence around 6:15 p.m. on February 18, 2017.

Lucas Doi Fick, Lynda's 36-year-old son, was present in the house at the time of the incident. He was wearing an ankle monitor and was found in possession of two firearms. Lucas was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm and was considered a suspect in the deaths of his mother and Biewener. Investigators were working to determine whether the guns found at the scene matched those used in the shootings. Lucas Fick had a lengthy criminal record, including convictions for drug possession, robbery, and unlawful possession of weapons and ammunition. He was also affiliated with a gang and had been convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2004.
The motive behind the shootings remained unclear, but a juvenile witness reported hearing an argument followed by what sounded like fireworks around the time of the incident. Lucas Fick had shown up at a neighbor's doorstep with Biewener's son shortly after the shootings, telling the neighbor that "something bad" had happened. The police were seeking additional witnesses and information to piece together the events leading up to the tragic deaths.
In the aftermath of the incident, legal proceedings ensued. A personal injury lawsuit was filed against Lucas Doi Fick and others, including the estate of Lynda Doi Fick.
