She worked as a catering coordinator at Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo, where she was known for her commitment to her job and her close relationships with her colleagues.

On the morning of April 16, 2017, Elyse's body was discovered near Waller Park in Santa Maria. Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a woman lying in the area and found Elyse deceased. Initial investigations indicated that foul play was involved. Elyse had been shot in the back of the head with a short-barreled rifle as she was getting out of her car. The investigation quickly identified her ex-boyfriend, Jorge Tovar Fernandez, as the primary suspect. Fernandez, a 26-year-old resident of Lompoc at the time, had a history of stalking Elyse even after their relationship had ended.
Following Elyse's death, Fernandez was arrested on April 19, 2017, after attending a child custody hearing at the Santa Barbara County Superior Courthouse in Santa Maria. He was charged with first-degree murder, with special circumstances of lying in wait and discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury. These charges made him eligible for the death penalty or life in prison without parole. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in December 2022, Fernandez pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. He admitted to the willful, premeditated, and deliberate killing of Elyse, acknowledging the severity of his actions.
The District Attorney, Joyce E. Dudley, described the murder as a horrific act of domestic violence, emphasizing the relentless stalking behavior exhibited by Fernandez. The case highlighted the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help in such situations.
