Shortly after, the rear passenger, identified as the minor X.F., re-entered the car. Within moments, Walker and the other males forcibly dragged Crosby out of the car and left him lying in the street before driving away. Crosby was shot and killed during this altercation.
The investigation into Crosby's murder led to the swift detention of the 14-year-old minor, X.F., in Chowchilla the following day. Law enforcement officers handcuffed X.F., placed him in a holding cell, and later transported him to Sacramento for questioning. During the interrogation, which began after midnight on November 19, 2018, X.F. was not advised of his rights under Miranda v. Arizona. Despite this, the juvenile court initially denied the minor's motion to suppress the interrogation. The prosecution argued that the admitted portion of the interrogation demonstrated X.F.'s consciousness of guilt. Consequently, the court found the murder allegation and two associated enhancements for gun use and great bodily injury to be true.

The appellate court agreed, reversing the true finding and remanding the case for a new jurisdiction hearing.
