Brandon Bryce Dawson, a 26-year-old resident of Orland, California, was reported missing on March 10, 2019, by his mother and girlfriend. He had last been seen in the early morning hours of March 8, 2019, under suspicious circumstances at a home in rural Orland. The Glenn County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) initially treated his disappearance as a missing person case.
However, on April 19, 2019, the investigation was upgraded to a homicide due to the suspicious nature of his disappearance and subsequent evidence gathered.
The investigation revealed that Dawson had been involved in a dispute with several individuals over illegal drugs. It is believed that he was kidnapped, tortured, and ultimately murdered on or after March 8, 2019. His body was later disposed of in a wilderness area in Colusa County. The search for Dawson's remains involved cadaver dogs and handlers from various Northern California regions, along with members of the Colusa County Sheriff's Office and Glenn and Colusa County Search and Rescue teams.
The case saw significant developments in 2021 when the Glenn Investigative Narcotics Task Force (GINTF) made several arrests. On July 28, 2021, Stanley Scott Grundy, 44, of Corning, and Clayton Stanley Humphrey, 39, of Flournoy, were arrested. Grundy faced charges of kidnap, torture, and first-degree murder with special allegations, while Humphrey was charged with first-degree murder, accessory after the fact, and moving or concealing evidence. Two days later, on July 30, 2021, John Cornelius Poldervaart, 52, of Capay, was arrested on charges of kidnap and torture.
The final arrest in the case occurred on August 24, 2021, when 44-year-old Lane Cleo Walker Jr. was apprehended at the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning, California. Walker had an outstanding warrant for kidnap, torture, and first-degree murder with special allegations. All four suspects were taken into custody and are currently held in the Glenn County Jail pending court proceedings.
The arrests and subsequent legal actions have brought some measure of closure to Dawson's family, who had been seeking justice for his untimely death. The case highlights the severe consequences of disputes involving illegal drugs and the extensive efforts law enforcement agencies undertake to solve such heinous crimes.
