Ricky Starks, a 65-year-old resident of Compton, California, tragically lost his life on July 3, 2019, during a chaotic series of events involving a high-speed chase and a shootout. Starks was riding his bicycle near the corner of Spruce Street and Aranbe Avenue when he was caught in the crossfire between Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies and the occupants of a black Cadillac Escalade. The pursuit began when deputies attempted to stop the Escalade for reckless driving.
The situation quickly escalated as the suspects opened fire on the deputies, leading to a prolonged and dangerous chase through Compton and into Inglewood. Starks was struck by gunfire and found lying near his bicycle, pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into Starks' death revealed that he was likely shot by a high-powered rifle, consistent with the weapon used by one of the suspects, Haden Taylor. In July 2020, Taylor, along with James Harris and Deven Littlejohn, was charged with murder in connection with Starks' death. The suspects were involved in a shootout with deputies, during which they fired multiple rounds, including shots at a sheriff's helicopter. The pursuit ended with the suspects abandoning the Escalade and fleeing on foot. Harris was apprehended and held without bail on suspicion of murder. The Escalade, which was outfitted with bullet-proof glass, was seized by investigators, but no weapons were found inside.
The case drew significant attention due to the involvement of a vehicle registered to Keenon Jackson, a rapper known as YG. Jackson denied any involvement, stating that he was recording in Hollywood at the time of the incident. Despite his denial, the investigation continued to focus on the suspects directly involved in the shootout. The Justice System Integrity Division of the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office released a report in October 2021, confirming that the fatal shot likely came from the suspects' high-powered rifle.
Starks' family, particularly his mother, Mary Starks, sought justice for his death. Mary described her son as a quiet man who was well-known in the neighborhood for riding his bicycle and working as a handyman. The family expressed their grief and frustration over the loss of Ricky, an innocent bystander caught in a violent confrontation. The investigation into the shootout and the subsequent legal proceedings highlighted the dangers faced by residents in areas affected by such violent incidents.
