Elmer Jonathan Diaz, a 31-year-old police officer from Lemoore, California, tragically lost his life on November 2, 2019. Officer Diaz was attending a birthday party at a home on Eddy Street, near Carolyn Avenue, in Hanford when he intervened in a domestic violence incident. A partygoer was being violently assaulted by her boyfriend, and Officer Diaz managed to move the woman outside to safety. However, when he re-entered the home to de-escalate the situation, the assailant opened fire, fatally shooting Officer Diaz and wounding his own father. The perpetrator then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
Officer Diaz had been a dedicated member of the Lemoore Police Department for three years and had previously served with the Huron Police Department. His commitment to his community was evident through his work with the Kings County Major Crimes Task Force and his efforts to help at-risk youth and young adults. Diaz was also recognized as the Department’s Officer of the Year in 2017.
The investigation into Officer Diaz's death revealed that the shooter was Ramiro Trevino Jr., a friend of Diaz. Trevino Jr. was involved in a heated argument with his girlfriend, which escalated into violence. Diaz's attempt to intervene and protect the woman ultimately led to his untimely death. The incident shocked the community and highlighted the dangers law enforcement officers face, even when off duty.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, there were no further arrests or litigations, as the primary suspect, Trevino Jr., had taken his own life. The community mourned the loss of a dedicated officer, and various memorials and tributes were held in his honor. The 19th Avenue overpass along Highway 198 in Lemoore was officially named the Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Overcrossing, ensuring that his sacrifice and service would not be forgotten.
