Jonathan Diaz, a 31-year-old police officer from Hanford, California, tragically lost his life on November 2, 2019. Diaz, who served with the Lemoore Police Department, was off-duty at a birthday party in Hanford when the incident occurred. The party took a violent turn when Ramiro Trevino Jr., a county welfare fraud investigator, began a heated argument with his girlfriend. Diaz, along with Trevino Jr.'s father, Ramiro Trevino Sr., attempted to intervene and calm the situation. Unfortunately, Trevino Jr. opened fire, fatally shooting Diaz and critically injuring his father before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide.
The investigation revealed that Trevino Jr. had been drinking before the incident, and the altercation escalated rapidly. Diaz and Trevino Sr. managed to get Trevino Jr.'s girlfriend to safety before the shooting occurred. Despite their efforts to defuse the situation, Trevino Jr. armed himself with multiple firearms and shot Diaz and his father. Trevino Sr. succumbed to his injuries a few days later.
The Kings County Sheriff's Office led the investigation, which included recovering audio and video evidence from the scene. The evidence confirmed that the incident began as a domestic violence situation and quickly escalated into a tragic murder-suicide. Diaz was remembered as a dedicated officer who had recently been promoted to the Major Crimes Task Force and was known for his commitment to community service and gang prevention efforts.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the community mourned the loss of Diaz, who left behind three children, including a 10-month-old daughter. His actions during the incident were hailed as heroic, and he was honored by his colleagues and community members for his bravery and dedication to protecting others.
