Brandi Barnes, a 35-year-old woman from Oakland, California, tragically lost her life on December 14, 2019. She was fatally shot while driving in East Oakland around 3:30 a.m. on that fateful day. The incident occurred near the intersection of Courtland and San Carlos avenues. Barnes was accompanied by a male companion at the time of the shooting. The assailants ambushed their vehicle, blocking their path with two other vehicles and opening fire, riddling Barnes' car with bullets.
Unfortunately, Barnes succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while her companion survived the attack.
The investigation into Barnes' death led to the arrest of Dewaun Poole, a 31-year-old Oakland resident with a criminal history. Poole was charged with the murder of Brandi Barnes, attempted murder for shooting at her companion, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, and carrying a loaded firearm in a city. Poole had prior convictions for unlawful firearm activity in 2017 and corporal injury to a relationship partner in 2019. Evidence against Poole included witness testimonies, video surveillance, electronic data, and DNA found on shell casings at the crime scene. Additionally, GPS records from Poole's phone placed him at the location of the shooting.
In court proceedings, Poole initially denied any involvement in the crime. However, he later entered a plea deal, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter. As a result, he was sentenced to 17 years in state prison. Despite Poole's conviction, other suspects involved in the ambush remain at large. One of the suspects, who was also arrested, testified against Poole under a prosecution grant of immunity. This testimony, along with other evidence, played a crucial role in securing Poole's conviction.
The case of Brandi Barnes' murder highlights the ongoing issue of gun violence in Oakland and the challenges faced by law enforcement in bringing all perpetrators to justice. While Poole's conviction provides some measure of closure, the search for additional suspects continues, underscoring the need for continued efforts to address and prevent such violent crimes in the community.
