Erin Kayla Lavender, a 19-year-old college student from Carson, California, tragically lost her life on December 15, 2019. Erin, along with her friend Dalelaja Francis Denise Hearn, a 17-year-old high school senior, attended a vigil that evening to honor a male friend who had died a week earlier from a suspected drug overdose. The vigil took place at a residence on Alvo Avenue in Carson. As the two young women were preparing to leave the vigil and got into their car, they were suddenly attacked.
