Roberto Rivera, a 48-year-old resident of Union City, was tragically killed on May 4, 2020, in Los Altos, California. Rivera was working as a mason in the backyard of a home on Highlands Circle when he was shot multiple times. The incident marked the first homicide in Los Altos since 1994. Rivera was found by police officers slumped over on his knees with gunshot wounds to his back and head.
Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Edgar Lainez-Portillo, a 25-year-old man from Redwood City. Lainez-Portillo was charged with first-degree murder and a firearm enhancement. According to court documents, Lainez-Portillo was dating Rivera's ex-girlfriend, which may have been a motive for the crime. Security footage from the scene showed a suspect arriving on a motorcycle, entering the backyard, and shooting Rivera before fleeing. Lainez-Portillo was identified as the suspect through this footage and other evidence, including a matching motorcycle and gear found at his home.
Lainez-Portillo pleaded guilty to the murder in August 2020 and was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, with eligibility for parole after 25 years. The case highlighted the collaborative efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los Altos Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and various local police departments, to solve the case swiftly and bring justice to Rivera and his family. The tragic event underscored the impact of personal relationships and jealousy in violent crimes, as well as the importance of thorough investigative work in solving such cases.
