As he waited, an unknown assailant approached the driver's side of his truck and opened fire, fatally wounding him. Despite the immediate response, Raul succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The incident was particularly shocking as nothing was taken from Raul, including his wallet, cellphone, truck, or the off-road vehicle he was towing.

In April 2024, investigators released security camera images and a composite sketch of a man with a distinctive "Ace of Spades" tattoo on his right hand, believed to be the getaway driver. The shooter was seen leaving the scene in a light gray Kia Forte, which was parked nearby. Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station captured the suspect moments before the murder.
Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with Raul's death. The authorities have identified three persons of interest, including a man named JaMaree Boone, who might have information about the killing.
