On April 5, 2021, Zhaiming Li, a 37-year-old resident of Monterey Park, California, was tragically killed in a shooting at the Music BBQ Bar. The incident occurred when Jing Yixin, 38, entered the restaurant and opened fire. Surveillance footage captured Yixin pulling a gun from a brown paper bag and shooting Li multiple times as he sat at a table. Ling Ling Wang, Yixin's wife, attempted to intervene but was also shot multiple times by Yixin.
Both Li and Wang succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The investigation revealed that Yixin and Wang were married and had two daughters, aged 9 and 12. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, but court documents indicated that the case involved a suspected child abuse report. Yixin was apprehended near the U.S.-Mexico border the day after the shooting. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and held on a $2 million bail.
The case garnered significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the involvement of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, FBI, and local police departments. Yixin was eventually convicted of the murders of his wife and Zhaiming Li, bringing some closure to the tragic event.
