Roberto Fletes Conejo, a 42-year-old Latino male, tragically lost his life on June 6, 2021, in North Hollywood, Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records, Fletes Conejo was fatally shot near 11353 Hatteras Street. The incident occurred when he attempted to intervene in a violent situation involving his friend's ex-boyfriend, Shane Winfield Rayment.
Rayment had gone to his former girlfriend's apartment, where a heated argument ensued, leading to an attempted kidnapping. Fletes Conejo, a family friend of the woman, tried to stop the abduction and was shot by Rayment.
Following the shooting, Rayment forced his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Marie Downes, into a pickup truck and fled the scene. Fletes Conejo was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Two days later, Rayment was apprehended by police in Hemet, California, with Downes in the vehicle. She was found injured but alive.
Rayment now faces multiple felony charges, including murder, kidnapping, criminal threats, injuring his girlfriend, first-degree residential burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Additionally, there are up to four other suspects involved in the case, one male and three females, who were allegedly with Rayment during the kidnapping attempt. The Los Angeles Police Department and the District Attorney's office have been actively investigating the case, with District Attorney George Gascón expressing his condolences to Fletes Conejo's family and commending his heroic actions.
Fletes Conejo is remembered as a hero who selflessly tried to protect another person. His family has since created a GoFundMe page in his memory, honoring him as a "big teddy bear" who was always willing to help others. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to bring all involved parties to justice.
