Shannon Betz, a 52-year-old resident of Vista, California, was tragically found dead on August 8, 2021. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head, and the manner of death was ruled as homicide. Betz's body was discovered by his roommate, who had been on vacation and returned home to find Betz deceased in his bedroom. The victim was found nude on his bed, and his wallet was missing, indicating a possible robbery.
The investigation quickly led to the arrest of Jheran Beverson, a 24-year-old man who was later convicted of second-degree murder for Betz's death. Prosecutors revealed that Betz and Beverson had initially connected through a dating app and arranged to meet at Betz's home on August 7, 2021. Evidence presented during the trial included photos of Beverson found on Betz's phone and location data from Beverson's cell phone, which placed him near Betz's home at the time of the murder.
Surveillance footage also captured a car matching Beverson's speeding away from the area shortly after the estimated time of the killing.
Beverson was arrested at his home in Oceanside a week after the murder. During the trial, it was revealed that Beverson had uninstalled the dating app from his phone around the same time the surveillance footage captured his car leaving the scene. Despite facing up to 40 years to life in prison, the judge sentenced Beverson to 15 years to life, taking into account his age, lack of criminal history, and the fact that only one shot was fired. The prosecution argued for a harsher sentence, citing the cold-blooded nature of the crime and the execution-style manner in which Betz was killed.
