Melvin Garcia-Vargas, a 33-year-old man from Forbestown, California, was found dead on September 11, 2021, with a gunshot wound in the back of an SUV parked along a remote road. The discovery of his body led to a significant investigation that uncovered an illegal marijuana growing operation. Butte County deputies, upon finding Garcia-Vargas's body, initiated an inquiry that quickly revealed the involvement of his family members in the illegal activities.
The next day, detectives spoke with Garcia-Vargas's father, Carlos Garcia-Hernandez, at his home in Sacramento. Evidence found at the home led investigators to determine that Garcia-Vargas had died at an illegal pot farm controlled by his father in the Forbestown area.
The investigation revealed that Garcia-Vargas likely accidentally shot himself while working at the illegal marijuana farm. In an attempt to conceal the death and the illegal operation, his father, along with his two brothers, Juan Garcia-Vargas and Ronald Garcia-Vargas, moved and hid his body. The detectives found evidence indicating that the family controlled multiple other cannabis growing operations. During the investigation, authorities discovered five guns and more than 1,400 marijuana plants across seven plots of land.
As a result of the investigation, Carlos Garcia-Hernandez, 66, and his two sons, Juan, 27, and Ronald, 28, were arrested on misdemeanor charges of illegal marijuana cultivation, possessing marijuana for sale, and unlawfully moving and disposing of human remains. Additionally, two other individuals, Juan Cruzcupido, 33, and Edgar Najera, 50, both from Sacramento, were also arrested. Cruzcupido and Najera faced charges of illegal marijuana cultivation and possessing marijuana for sale, with Cruzcupido facing an additional charge of unlawfully moving and disposing of human remains.
The case highlighted the dangers and complexities associated with illegal marijuana cultivation in rural areas. The investigation into Garcia-Vargas's death and the subsequent arrests underscored the efforts of law enforcement to crack down on illegal drug operations and the lengths to which individuals involved in such activities might go to avoid detection.
