On November 29, 2021, Meba Solomon Getachew, a 32-year-old resident of Oak Run, California, was found dead alongside 33-year-old Gunnar Eliot Yeager. Both men were discovered near two parked vehicles on a dirt road off Zig Zag Lane in Oak Run. The Shasta County Sheriff's Office determined that both victims had been shot to death. The investigation revealed that Getachew and Yeager had traveled from Oregon to Shasta County to sell marijuana to Simon Abraham Tikue. However, the transaction turned fatal when Tikue robbed and murdered them.
The case quickly developed into a double homicide investigation. Simon Abraham Tikue was identified as the primary suspect. Tikue had a history of violent crimes, including a previous incident in 2018 where he kidnapped and robbed another individual during a marijuana transaction. DNA evidence from a glove found at the scene of Getachew and Yeager's murder matched Tikue's DNA from the 2018 case, solidifying his connection to the crime.
Tikue was arrested in September 2022 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, among other charges. During the trial, it was revealed that Tikue had lured Getachew and Yeager to the remote location under the pretense of purchasing marijuana, only to rob and kill them. The jury found Tikue guilty on all counts, including first-degree murder, kidnapping for robbery, and several other charges. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The tragic deaths of Meba Solomon Getachew and Gunnar Eliot Yeager highlighted the dangers associated with illegal drug transactions and the violent tendencies of individuals like Simon Abraham Tikue. The case also underscored the importance of thorough investigative work and the role of DNA evidence in securing convictions for violent crimes.
