He was a man of faith, a loving father, and a star baseball player who had earned a PhD and was certified as a Mental Health First Aid responder.
The incident that led to Mejorado's death began as a road rage altercation on another freeway before escalating on Interstate 5. According to the California Highway Patrol, the altercation involved two drivers, Mejorado and 33-year-old David Perry. The dispute culminated in Perry allegedly pulling up next to Mejorado's vehicle and firing multiple shots through the driver-side window. Mejorado was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
David Perry was arrested less than 24 hours after the shooting and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on felony murder charges. Perry's arraignment took place on December 9, 2021, where he faced additional charges, including a special circumstance of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle with intent to harm. The case was continued to January 20, 2022, at the request of Perry's public defender.
