Nicholas Gene Lord, a 38-year-old resident of Oakland, California, tragically lost his life on June 7, 2022. He was fatally shot inside his home in the early hours of the morning. The incident occurred around 12:11 a.m. in the 1100 block of Novelda Drive in East Oakland. According to police reports, Lord was involved in a dispute with another individual who subsequently shot him and fled the scene before authorities arrived.
Despite other people being present in the residence at the time, no one else was injured in the altercation.
The investigation into Lord's death led to the identification and arrest of a suspect, 29-year-old Donald Marler. Marler was apprehended two days after the homicide, with the suspected murder weapon in his possession. Witnesses had identified Marler as the individual involved in the fatal dispute with Lord. Following his arrest, Marler faced multiple charges, including one count of murder and another felony charge for possessing the firearm used in the killing.
Marler's criminal history includes previous convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy charges in Contra Costa County in 2014, as well as evading police causing injury and vehicle theft in Sacramento County in January 2023. At the time of his arrest for Lord's murder, Marler was serving a prison sentence for the latter offenses and was eligible for parole in 2025. He was extradited from Avenal State Prison to Alameda County to face the new charges related to Lord's death.
The legal proceedings against Marler began with a criminal complaint filed in July 2023. Despite the charges being filed, Marler was not brought to court until February 2024, when he demanded a speedy trial. He is currently being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and is scheduled to enter a plea in late February 2024. The case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to seek additional information and evidence to support the prosecution.
